Rank tracking is not ASO. It’s the first 10% of it.
Rank tracking is only the first 10% of ASO. Why “see your rank” tools fall short for Shopify app teams, and the three signals to track per keyword instead.
Most ASO tools focus on rank tracking: a keyword’s rank in a list. But rank alone doesn’t tell you what to do tomorrow. A keyword you rank #2 on may be a low-volume vanity term. A keyword you rank #41 on may be where 60% of category installs live. The number is the same shape; the decisions are opposite.
In short
- Rank alone is ambiguous: #2 on a vanity term and #41 on a term holding most of a category’s installs look the same on a leaderboard.
- Every keyword needs three signals to be decidable: volume tier, current rank against a realistic ceiling, and trend.
- KES Score folds those three into one 0–100 number per row, so you sort by what points at installs, not what looks good in a screenshot.
The three signals you actually need
Every keyword has three properties that, together, tell you whether it’s worth your week:
- Volume tier: how much install pressure flows through it.
- Current rank: where you sit today, against the realistic ceiling.
- Trend: whether the keyword is climbing for you or for someone else.
Without all three, you’re guessing. With all three, you get a verdict.
What we built instead
KES Score blends those three signals per keyword and gives you a single 0–100 number per row. Sort the leaderboard by KES and work the top rows first.
Common questions
Is rank tracking the same as ASO?
No. Rank tracking is one input, roughly the first 10% of App Store Optimization. It tells you where you sit but not whether the keyword is worth winning or what to change. Real ASO pairs each rank with the term’s volume and trend, then turns that into listing work.
What should Shopify app teams track instead of rank alone?
Three properties per keyword: how much install pressure flows through it, where you rank today against a realistic ceiling, and whether the term is trending toward you or away. Together they give a verdict; rank on its own only gives you a number.
“Rank changes are events. KES is a verdict.”
KES isn’t magic. But the metric you sort by decides what you work on, so sort by the one that points at installs, not the one that just looks good in a screenshot.
